Windows RT tablets are thin, light weight tablets designed to run the new Windows "modern" apps. Windows RT is designed to run on ARM processors typically found in mobile phones and consumer tablets like the Samsung Galaxy Tabs and Apple iPads. That also means that Windows RT tablets are generally lower cost and have better battery life than their Windows 8 tablet cousins.
Windows RT tablets do not run traditional desktop programs like Windows 8 tablets do.
Windows RT tablets do come with a touch optimised version of Microsoft Office Home and Student 2013 that includes Excel, Word, PowerPoint and OneNote. They also support Internet Explorer 10 for an advanced and touch friendly web browsing experience.
Microsoft Outlook is not included and will not run on Windows RT however owners of Windows RT tablets can run the built in touch friendly Mail app.
On Windows RT tablets you have full access to apps in the Windows Store. Windows Defender is built right in and provides up-to-date virus and malware protection. Windows RT users also get the benefit of a true multi-user operating system with out of the box family protection.

If you're looking for a simple companion device to run some apps from the Windows Store then Windows RT is for you. If you want to run your existing desktop programs or you're looking for a more advanced device to replace your laptop then you need to look at a Windows 8 tablet instead.
